Mistake Eight. Giving them privileges they didn’t earn.
After all of the back talk, temper tantrums, hitting, biting, etc. you tell them, “Let’s go to McDonald’s!” What? Would your boss reward you for arriving late to work, never finishing a task, or treating your co-workers unprofessionally? “Hey, I would like to give you a bonus for all your bad behavior!” What?
Mistake Nine. Allowing children to run away from you (ie. parking lots, store aisles)
Where are the parents? The child is in aisle 9 while you are in aisle 6. You come out the store and your child dashes across the street in front of a oncoming traffic. Could this behavior have something to do with how you treat your child at home? If children are allowed to do whatever they wanted at home, they will do whatever they want elsewhere.
Mistake Ten. Not allowing your child to be a child.
Some children act more adult than their parents. They are expected to babysit their siblings, clean the household, cook meals, and help their parents with whatever they command on a regular basis leaving no room for playing games, reading, socializing with friends, or anything else. When the child shares a personal interest with the parent, they are silenced with yet another adult request. The parent doesn’t do anything to encourage their children’s’ hobbies or interests because they will interfere with mostly the parents money and personal time. Eventually, the child will rebel.
Now that you realize why your child at times give you and others so many problems, rather than nodding your head in agreement, create a plan to correct their behavior and yours too.
If you are interested in the tool to create the plan, get our Workshop@Home DVD series here. God bless you parents!
